Our Story

I was saved as a young boy after growing up in a happy home that talked about Jesus all the time. My dad has been a pastor all my life, and while growing up in rural Oklahoma, being a pastor was all I ever really wanted to do. After starting college, I met and married Brooke, then dropped out of college, had my two children (Bailey and Britton), and became the pastor of a rural church in Oklahoma. This all happened within a four-year span of time. Brooke and I first felt the call to church planting in 2003 and in 2004, planted a church in Portland, Oregon. We made Phoenix our home in 2011, and started Valley Life Church on January 8, 2012 in a movie theater. From day one, Valley Life was planted as a disciple-making, church-planting church. We have seen hundreds of people baptized and six other churches planted since we started, and by God’s grace, we will see many many more of both.

Our mission

Make Disciples

First and foremost, Valley Life has been formed around the teaching of the gospel. We want to be very clear about what this means. The Bible is not just a collection of stories, but rather one cohesive narrative that contains:
  • The Beauty of God’s creation. Genesis 1:31 - "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day."
  • The Brokenness that has resulted from sin. Romans 3:9-10 - "What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one;’”
  • The Truth embodied in the perfect life and sacrifice of Jesus. John 8:31-32 - "So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’"
  • The Compassion that God has shown through his plan for redemption. 2 Corinthians 5:21 - "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."
  • The Community that we experience between each other and God. Revelation 5:9-10 - "And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.’”

The study of the gospel is as simple as it is deep. It will always be foundational to our teaching. We believe that a gospel-infused life is only possible when lived in community with other believers, and with those who are still exploring this idea. Within community we hope to provide an avenue for growth for people at all stages of their spiritual development.

Plant Churches

Ultimately, the end of all this discipleship is to plant other churches to reach other communities. In training volunteers to teach children, lead worship, disciple one another, etc, we hope to raise up leaders who will impact local communities. We are not trying to make one big church, but rather a network of connected churches that minister locally.
